Frequently asked questions

Everything you might want to know before you pull up a chair. Don’t see your question? Reply to any issue and I’ll answer it.

What is My Fellow Americans?

My Fellow Americans is a weekly newsletter that brings rural stories to urban and suburban readers. Each week, one story spotlights a rural person, community, or organization you don’t know but should.

Who writes it?

Nina Mishkin, a Los Angeles–based marketing and communications strategist. You can read more on the About page.

What do I get for free?

The Story, the weekly rural story, is free for everyone. Every story ends with three lines: Know, Consume, and Do.

What are Know, Consume, and Do?

Know: the one fact or structural cause to take away. Consume: a longer piece on the same topic, to go deeper. Do: one concrete action tied to that week’s story.

What do paid subscribers get?

The full This Week in Rural America every week, a searchable archive that grows with every issue, and first access to anything new we offer.

How much does it cost?

The first 176 Founding Fellow Americans pay $70 a year, and that rate is locked in for as long as they stay subscribed. All other paid subscribers pay our later pricing, which we’ll announce when the founding period ends. See the details on the Upgrade page.

What does “Founding Fellow American” mean?

Founding Fellow Americans are the first 176 paid subscribers. They get the locked-in annual rate of $70 and are thanked by name on our website and in an issue, or anonymously if they prefer. Once those 176 spots are taken, new paid subscribers join at the later pricing.

Where does the 10% go?

To support our shared reality, 10% of all paid subscription revenue goes to Farm Aid, a permanent commitment.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. You can cancel from your account at any time, and your access continues through the end of the period you paid for.

How do you choose and check the stories?

Each story features people, communities, or organizations whose lives are tied to yours, whether you know it or not. Every fact links to its source, and if I get something wrong, tell me and I’ll fix it.

Can I suggest a story?

Please do. Reply to any issue with the person, place, or organization you think more Americans should know about.
